Domainhotelli: DKIM, SPF and DMARC setup
Before you start
Domainhotelli's guides are in Finnish. This guide gives the names of screens and buttons as those guides write them, with a translation in brackets.
Domainhotelli's control panel is WePanel. To open it, sign in to your Domainhotelli account and choose Omat hotellit (My hotels) > Hallinnoi (Manage) > Avaa hallintapaneeli (Open control panel).
You can change DNS records in the control panel only if example.com is connected to a Domainhotelli service that includes name service. Domainhotelli names DNS-palvelu (DNS service) as its cheapest service that includes name service.
Domainhotelli has two guides that name the DNS screens differently. Its guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC dates from October 2024. Its DNS guide for WePanel dates from August 2026. Where the two differ, this guide gives both.
Turn on DKIM
Domainhotelli creates the DKIM record automatically when it sets up a web hosting package. What matters, Domainhotelli says, is that the record exists on the name servers of example.com.
Domainhotelli's October 2024 guide says that sähköpostin todennus (email authentication) in the control panel shows the state of the DKIM record, and installs the record if it is missing. Domainhotelli's WePanel guides do not name this screen. If your control panel has no such screen, ask Domainhotelli's support at support@domainhotelli.fi.
Sign with your own domain
Reports show mail from Domainhotelli's servers signed by a domain other than example.com. DMARC counts DKIM only when the signing domain is example.com or a subdomain of it.
Domainhotelli's guides cover only whether the DKIM record of example.com exists. They do not say which domain signs the mail. Check the record as in Turn on DKIM. If reports still show another signing domain, ask Domainhotelli's support at support@domainhotelli.fi.
Check the DKIM key
Mail from Domainhotelli's servers carries a DKIM signature for example.com, but the signature fails. Domainhotelli's October 2024 guide names only one place to look: sähköpostin todennus in the control panel. It shows the state of the DKIM record and installs a missing one. The WePanel guides do not name this screen, so if your panel lacks it, ask Domainhotelli's support.
On Mailmoni's DNS tab, find the selector in the DKIM table. It shows whether the key was found.
SPF
Domainhotelli sets up an SPF record on its web hosting packages by default. The record allows mail from the package's website and from its mail server. Domainhotelli's example is the default record of a package on the server hotelli03.domainhotelli.fi:
v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:31.217.196.210 +ip4:31.217.196.212 ~all
Domainhotelli explains the parts like this:
+mxallows the servers in the MX records of example.com, which receive its mail.+aallows the server in the A record of example.com, which runs the website. A contact form on the website sends its mail from there.+ip4allows one IP address. In the example, they are the addresses of the mail servermail03.domainhotelli.fiand the website serverhotelli03.domainhotelli.fi.~allasks receiving servers to mark mail from any other server as spam. With-allin its place, they reject that mail outright.
The addresses belong to the example's server, so the record of example.com may list others.
The SPF record is a TXT record. To change it in WePanel:
- In the Verkkotunnukset (Domains) section, choose DNS-vyöhykkeen muokkaus (DNS zone editing), then example.com.
- Click the button at the right edge of the record and choose Muokkaa DNS-tietuetta (Edit DNS record).
- Save the change with Päivitä DNS-tietue (Update DNS record).
A domain may have only one SPF record. If another service also sends mail as example.com, add it to this record instead of adding a second one.
Your DMARC record
Domainhotelli calls DMARC an optional extra protection against misuse of your domain. With it, you choose what receiving servers do with mail whose From field and sending domain do not match: accept it, mark it as spam or reject it.
A domain may have only one DMARC record. If example.com already has one, change it instead of adding a second.
Domainhotelli's October 2024 guide creates the record with a form:
- In the DNS settings of the control panel, find example.com and choose hallinta (manage).
- Click the arrow next to the tietueen lisääminen (add record) button and choose DMARC.
- Choose how mail that does not match is handled.
- For other settings, choose Optional Parameters. Enter your reporting address in the send reports to fields, and the reports go to that address.
Domainhotelli's WePanel guide from August 2026 names neither this form nor DMARC. It adds TXT records with Lisää DNS-tietue (Add DNS record), and a DMARC record is a TXT record named _dmarc. In the Nimi (Name) field, the panel fills in your domain after a dot, so _dmarc. becomes _dmarc.example.com. If your panel has neither the form nor Lisää DNS-tietue, ask Domainhotelli's support at support@domainhotelli.fi.
Check it worked
- If your control panel has sähköpostin todennus, check the state of the DKIM record of example.com there. Only Domainhotelli's October 2024 guide names this screen.
- Domainhotelli says record changes can take a few hours. After that, press Check now on Mailmoni's DNS tab. The SPF and DMARC cards show no problem.
- Most mailbox providers send one report a day. Reports from the next 24 to 48 hours show whether SPF and DKIM align for mail from Domainhotelli's servers.
