Elisa: SPF setup
Before you start
Elisa's pages are in Finnish. This guide gives Elisa's own words in quotes, with an English gloss.
Elisa sells domains to businesses through its "Verkkotunnus" (domain name) service. Elisa says the service includes running the domain's name servers, and that Elisa makes the DNS changes you ask for at no extra charge. The Elisa pages this guide is written from describe no screen where you change the records of example.com yourself. They do not describe how to ask Elisa for a change either. If Elisa keeps the DNS of example.com, ask Elisa's business customer service. Its phone line and message form are on Yritysasiakaspalvelun yhteystiedot (contacts for business customers).
Elisa's email settings page names the outgoing server of Elisa's email service, smtpa.kolumbus.fi. The Elisa pages this guide is written from name no SPF include and no DKIM key for mail sent through it as example.com. So this guide covers the records Elisa keeps for you, and not mail sent through Elisa. If reports for example.com show mail from Elisa's servers, find out who sends as example.com through Elisa, and ask Elisa how that mail can pass DMARC.
SPF
A domain has one SPF record. If Elisa keeps the DNS of example.com, send Elisa's business customer service the whole new record, and ask Elisa to replace the old record with it.
In Elisa's own examples, each record is one line, "alaviivoineen ja lainausmerkkeineen" (with its underscores and quotation marks). This SPF example is from Elisa's Microsoft 365 page, in the part for a domain that does not move to Elisa. There, Elisa tells you to give the records to the domain's own administrator:
example.com. IN TXT "v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all"
Check it worked
- Once Elisa confirms the change, check example.com again on Mailmoni's DNS tab. It shows the SPF and DMARC records of example.com, and whether reports come to your reporting address.
- Most mailbox providers send one report a day. Reports from the next 24 to 48 hours show the results under the new records.
