Hostingpalvelu: DKIM, SPF and DMARC setup
Before you start
Hostingpalvelu's guides are in Finnish. This guide gives the names of screens and buttons as those guides write them, with a translation in brackets.
You make these changes in Hostingpalvelu's control panel. Sign in to it from Oma tili (My account), the button at the top right of every page on Hostingpalvelu's site. The control panel has its own username and password, separate from the customer pages. You can also open it from the customer pages without separate credentials.
Hostingpalvelu has two guides that name the DNS screens differently. Its guide to SPF, DKIM and DMARC dates from April 2022. Its DNS guide, filed under WePanel, dates from August 2026. Where the two differ, this guide gives both.
Turn on DKIM
Hostingpalvelu creates the DKIM record automatically when it sets up a web hosting package. What matters, Hostingpalvelu says, is that the record exists on the name servers of example.com.
Hostingpalvelu's April 2022 guide says that sähköpostin todennus (email authentication) in the control panel shows the state of the DKIM record, and installs the record if it is missing. Hostingpalvelu's WePanel guides do not name this screen. If your control panel has no such screen, ask Hostingpalvelu's customer service at asiakaspalvelu@hostingpalvelu.fi.
Sign with your own domain
Reports show mail from Hostingpalvelu's servers signed by a domain other than example.com. DMARC counts DKIM only when the signing domain is example.com or a subdomain of it.
Hostingpalvelu's guides cover only whether the DKIM record of example.com exists. They do not say which domain signs the mail. Check the record as in Turn on DKIM. If reports still show another signing domain, ask Hostingpalvelu's customer service at asiakaspalvelu@hostingpalvelu.fi.
Check the DKIM key
Mail from Hostingpalvelu's servers carries a DKIM signature for example.com, but the signature fails. Hostingpalvelu's April 2022 guide names only one place to look: sähköpostin todennus in the control panel. It shows the state of the DKIM record and installs a missing one. The WePanel guides do not name this screen, so if your panel lacks it, ask Hostingpalvelu's customer service.
On Mailmoni's DNS tab, find the selector in the DKIM table. It shows whether the key was found.
SPF
Hostingpalvelu sets up an SPF record on its web hosting packages by default. The record allows mail from the package's website and from its mail server. Hostingpalvelu's example is the default record of a package on the server cloud26.hostingpalvelu.fi:
v=spf1 +mx +a +ip4:31.217.193.103 ~all
Hostingpalvelu explains the parts like this:
+mxallows the servers in the MX records of example.com, which receive its mail.+aallows the server in the A record of example.com, which runs the website. A contact form on the website sends its mail from there.+ip4allows one IP address. In the example, it is the address of the mail servermail26.hostingpalvelu.fi.~allasks receiving servers to mark mail from any other server as spam. With-allin its place, they reject that mail outright.
The address belongs to the example's server, so the record of example.com may list another.
The SPF record is a TXT record. To change it in the control panel:
- In the Verkkotunnukset (Domains) section, choose DNS-vyöhykkeen muokkaus (DNS zone editing), then example.com.
- Click the button at the right edge of the record and choose Muokkaa DNS-tietuetta (Edit DNS record).
- Save the change with Päivitä DNS-tietue (Update DNS record).
A domain may have only one SPF record. If another service also sends mail as example.com, add it to this record instead of adding a second one.
Your DMARC record
Hostingpalvelu calls DMARC an optional extra protection against misuse of your domain. With it, you choose what receiving servers do with mail whose From field and sending domain do not match: accept it, mark it as spam or reject it.
A domain may have only one DMARC record. If example.com already has one, change it instead of adding a second.
Hostingpalvelu's April 2022 guide creates the record with a form:
- In the DNS management of the control panel, find example.com and choose hallinta (manage).
- Click the arrow next to the tietueen lisääminen (add record) button and choose DMARC.
- Choose how mail that does not match is handled.
- For other settings, choose Optional Parameters. Enter your reporting address in the send reports to fields, and the reports go to that address.
Hostingpalvelu's DNS guide from August 2026 names neither this form nor DMARC. It adds TXT records with Lisää DNS-tietue (Add DNS record), and a DMARC record is a TXT record named _dmarc. The guide says that when you type a prefix in the name field, the panel adds your domain after it as you move to the next field. The record then sits at _dmarc.example.com. If your panel has neither the form nor Lisää DNS-tietue, ask Hostingpalvelu's customer service at asiakaspalvelu@hostingpalvelu.fi.
Check it worked
- If your control panel has sähköpostin todennus, check the state of the DKIM record of example.com there. Only Hostingpalvelu's April 2022 guide names this screen.
- Hostingpalvelu says record changes can take a few hours. After that, press Check now on Mailmoni's DNS tab. The SPF and DMARC cards show no problem.
- Most mailbox providers send one report a day. Reports from the next 24 to 48 hours show whether SPF and DKIM align for mail from Hostingpalvelu's servers.
