Telia: SPF setup

Before you start

Reports for example.com name Telia as the source when mail as example.com came from an address in Telia's network, or carries a DKIM signature from telia.fi. Telia's page for consumer customers names smtp.tele.fi as the outgoing mail server for anyone on a Telia connection, whichever mail service they use, Gmail or Outlook for example. Telia lists email programs, trail cameras, the Telia Yhteyspiste service and cottage-monitoring services among the users of this server. Telia Finland manages it. Telia's pages say nothing about SPF, DKIM or DMARC for mail sent through it.

Telia's business domain service, Telia Verkkotunnuspalvelu, includes DNS but no web space and no email. If example.com is registered there, its DNS records are edited in the Minun Telia Yrityksille service. Telia's instructions are in Finnish, so this guide gives Telia's Finnish names, with a translation in parentheses.

1. Sign in to Minun Telia Yrityksille as a business customer.
2. Under Hallinnoi liittymiä ja laitteita (Manage subscriptions and devices), choose Vanha tuotehallinta (Old product management). It opens the old business portal.
3. Under Verkkotunnuspalvelut (Domain services), choose example.com.

Telia allows self-management only for domains in its Primary maintenance ("Primary-ylläpito"). If example.com is missing from the service, Telia adds it when you make a service request there.

In Telia's DNS, Lisää uusi tietue (Add new record) adds a record. The edit icon on the right of a record changes it, and you save with the floppy-disk icon. For a record at example.com itself, enter the domain name in Tietue (Record). Telia's portal does not accept an empty field.

Mail sent from Telia's network

When reports show mail from Telia that uses example.com with neither DKIM nor aligned SPF, it fails DMARC. Telia's pages describe no setting that signs this mail with example.com, and name no SPF include for smtp.tele.fi.

1. Find the device or program that sends as example.com from a Telia connection. Telia's list of users of smtp.tele.fi is a place to start: email programs, trail cameras, Telia Yhteyspiste and cottage-monitoring services.
2. If nobody at your organization sends from a Telia connection, treat the mail as someone else sending as you.

SPF

Telia's pages name no SPF include for smtp.tele.fi.

If the DNS of example.com is in Telia Verkkotunnuspalvelu, the SPF record is a TXT record there. Open example.com as in Before you start. If example.com already has an SPF record, click the edit icon on its right, change Lisäinformaatio (Additional information) and save. Otherwise click Lisää uusi tietue, enter example.com in Tietue, enter the SPF value in Lisäinformaatio, choose a TTL from the drop-down list and save. A domain may have only one SPF record.

Check the DKIM key

Compare a DKIM key published in Telia's DNS with the one your sending service shows. Telia's DNS splits a TXT value longer than 255 characters into pieces of 255, and shows a " mark at the end of one piece and the start of the next. Telia says these marks do not affect the record, so leave them out of the comparison.

A 2048-bit DKIM key is longer than 255 characters. Telia's portal lets you add such a value, but not yet edit or delete it. To change or remove one, make a service request, and Telia's delivery team makes the change for you.

Publish the DMARC record

Open example.com as in Before you start and click Lisää uusi tietue. Enter _dmarc in Tietue and the DMARC record in Lisäinformaatio, choose a TTL from the drop-down list, and save with the floppy-disk icon.

A domain may have only one DMARC record. If example.com already has a DMARC record, it sends reports to your reporting address. Do not add a second record.

Check it worked

1. Telia's portal confirms every addition, change and deletion. Telia says that if it does not, the change was not saved, and you should make a service request.
2. Most mailbox providers send one report a day. Reports from the next 24 to 48 hours show whether mail from Telia's network still uses example.com.
