API: tokens, endpoints and webhooks

The plan does not allow this request

HTTP status 403

The API works from the Pro plan up. This token works again, unchanged, when the organization moves back to a plan that includes the API.

From Pro up

The token is valid, but the organization's plan, or the access the token was created with, does not cover this request. The detail field names one of the six causes below, and most of them need an admin to fix.

The six causes

The plan has no API

The API needs a plan from Pro up. The organization's tokens are kept, and each works again, unchanged, when the organization is back on such a plan.

The token is paused

This happens on Pro and above, when the organization moves to a plan that includes fewer API tokens than it has. The oldest tokens keep working up to the plan's count, and the newer ones are paused. The token list marks which ones. A paused token works again when the plan includes more tokens, or when an older token is revoked or expires. The prices page lists how many tokens each plan includes.

The plan does not allow writing

Writing through the API needs a plan from Teams up. Starting an export, POST /api/v1/exports, is a write. The token can still read.

The token can only read

The plan allows writing, which starts at Teams, but this token was created to read only. A token keeps the access it was created with, so the fix is a new token.

The metrics endpoint needs a higher plan

The /metrics endpoint, which Prometheus reads, needs a plan from Teams up.

MCP needs a higher plan

Reading through MCP, with a token or with an app you connected by signing in, needs a plan from Teams up.

What to do

  • A plan cause: an admin moves the organization to the plan the detail names, under Settings, Plan and billing.
  • A paused token: an admin revokes an older token that nobody needs any more, under Settings, Developer, API tokens. The paused token then takes its place.
  • A read-only token: an admin creates a new token with write access in the same place, and you put it in your script in place of the old one.
