Do I add subdomains separately?

On every plan

No. You add your domain, such as example.com, and its reports bring its subdomains with them. A subdomain needs no verifying of its own, and it does not count toward the domains your plan includes.

How a subdomain shows up

The domain's Home tab has a card that lists every subdomain its reports name in the chosen window, with the number of messages. A subdomain shows up in one of two ways.

Without a DMARC record of its own. Mail from news.example.com is covered by the record of example.com. That record's sp tag sets the policy for subdomains, and without sp its p tag does. The mail shows in your domain's reports under the subdomain's name, and the card names the policy that covers it.

With a DMARC record of its own. When news.example.com publishes its own record and sends its reports to your domain's reporting address, the reports name the subdomain as their own domain. We then add it under your domain by ourselves, already verified. A domain can gather at most 100 subdomains this way. A report for one more is refused.

What a subdomain has of its own

A subdomain with its own record has its own DNS tab, checked on the same schedule as its domain. It also has its own Readiness page and its own Records tab for building its record.

Everything else lives on its domain:

  • Its Sources, Reports, Forensic and TLS-RPT screens are its domain's screens, filtered to the subdomain's name.
  • Its readiness uses its domain's thresholds, which the domain's Readiness page shows.
  • Its alerts are set on its domain, and its domain's alerts cover it.
  • Adding, verifying, removing and publishing happen on its domain. Removing a domain removes its subdomains with it.

Adding a subdomain as a domain of its own

You can add a subdomain with Add domain as a domain of its own, as long as it is not already listed under its domain. It then has its own reporting address and its own pages. It needs verifying, and it counts toward your plan's domains.
