When a card payment fails
On every plan
When a renewal fails, your paid plan stays and keeps working. We try the card again 3, 7 and 14 days after the first failed attempt, and the admins get an email each time an attempt fails. An admin can pay at once with Pay now, or change the card for the next attempt. If the last attempt fails too, the paid plan ends and the organization moves to Starter.
What happens
- The plan stays, with all its features, while we try again.
- Every admin gets an email for each failed attempt: the amount, the reason the bank gave, and the days of the next attempt and the last one. The billing email gets the same, unless it is an admin's own address.
- Settings › Plan and billing shows the same, with Pay now and Change card.
- Until the payment is paid, you cannot move to another plan, switch between monthly and yearly, cancel, or add a domain above the ones your plan includes.
The retries
We try the card again 3, 7 and 14 days after the first failed attempt. Each attempt charges for the same period and items as the renewal that failed. When one goes through, the plan goes on as before and the invoice goes to the billing email. The period still starts on the day it was due, so your renewal day does not move.
The email and the page give the reason the bank gave, such as an expired card or not enough funds. When the card on file can no longer be charged at all, the attempts on it cannot succeed. The page and the email then name the day the plan ends unless you pay with another card or change the card.
Pay the failed amount now
Pay now on Plan and billing pays the failed period at once, on Mollie's page. It charges the failed amount, with the VAT your billing details give today. The card you pay with becomes the card for later payments.
When the payment goes through, the page says your plan continues, the retries stop, and the invoice goes to the billing email. If it does not go through, nothing changes, and the retries go on as planned.
While Mollie is still processing an attempt for the period, the page has no Pay now. It says Mollie is processing the payment, and offers Pay now again if that attempt fails.
Change the card without paying now
Change card, in the same box, takes a new card on Mollie's page and charges nothing. The next attempt is then charged to the new card. See Change the card you pay with.
If the last attempt fails
If the attempt 14 days after the first one fails too, the paid plan ends that day:
- The organization moves to Starter, and every admin gets an email that the plan ended because the payment failed.
- For 14 days, every domain and member stays, with your history. Then the limits of Starter apply. What happens when you move to a lower plan has each step.
- We revoke the card at Mollie, so nothing more is charged to it. Domains added during the last period are not billed.
To go back, an admin buys the plan again under Choose a paid plan before the 14 days are over, and nothing is lost. See Buy a paid plan.
When VIES stops confirming your VAT number
For a business in another EU country, the renewal then fails, and nothing is charged. Every admin gets an email that says a VAT number VIES confirms is needed, and so does the billing email. Until VIES confirms one, the page has no Pay now and links the billing details instead. Each later attempt asks VIES again, and so does saving the number under Change billing details. Once VIES confirms it, the next attempt or Pay now charges the period with no VAT. If no attempt goes through, the plan ends as above. See Your VAT number.
